Are you an experienced multi-process welder with strong fabrication skills? Can you interpret detailed CAD drawings and technical plans? Do you have experience of mechanical construction and an interest in theatre production or automation systems? 

We are looking for a skilled Fabricator/Welder to join the team at our Scenic Workshops in Stratford-upon-Avon, where sets and props for our productions come to life. In this role you will help deliver innovative, high-quality and sustainable stage scenery used across RSC productions. 

You will undertake a wide variety of fabrication projects, supporting designers' visions through expert engineering and construction. Alongside welding and fabrication work, you will contribute to the mechanical elements of scenery construction and support the integration of automated scenic systems. This role also involves supporting fit-ups, installations and modifications across RSC productions and venues, requiring a flexible and collaborative approach to working within a live theatre environment. 

Reporting to the Head of Scenic Construction, key areas of responsibility include (please see the Role Profile for the comprehensive list):  

• Reviewing technical drawings and completing assigned tasks.  
• Measuring, cutting and assembling scenic components using industrial machinery.  
• Fabricating and finishing steelwork to a high standard.  
• Carrying out regular tool safety checks and maintaining workshop standards.  
• Loading scenic components into venues and securing them safely on stage.  
• Assisting with on-site modifications, repairs and technical adjustments during fit-up and production periods. 

To be suitable for this role, it is essential that you have:  

• High-level MIG, TIG and ARC welding skills.  
• Experience using fabrication equipment such as cold saws, grinders, band saws and plasma cutters.  
• Experience creating curved architectural scenery using tube benders and rollers.  
• Good material knowledge of mild steel, aluminium, stainless steel and brass.  
• The ability to read and interpret complex CAD drawings, technical blueprints and scale models.  
• A strong understanding of mechanical construction principles and fabrication techniques.  
• An awareness of, or experience working with automated/moving scenic elements.  
• A good understanding of health and safety, including safe and sustainable working practices. 

This is a full-time, permanent position based at our Scenic Workshops in Stratford-upon-Avon. You will work an annualised hours contract based on an average of 44 hours per week, with flexibility required during production periods, including occasional evening and weekend working.
